Airline hub

An airport an airline uses as a central base for routing flights and connecting passengers between destinations. Its position in the airline’s network concentrates passenger transfers and flight operations.

Hub-and-spoke network: A network structure that routes traffic between many endpoints through one or more central nodes. Airlines use this structure to connect destinations through a hub rather than operate every route directly.
Airline route network: The set of destinations and flight connections served by an airline. A hub is a central node in an airline’s broader pattern of routes.
Point-to-point network: A transport network that links origin and destination pairs directly rather than routing most traffic through central nodes. It contrasts with a hub network by favoring direct routes over centralized connections.
Economies of density: Cost advantages that arise when greater traffic volume makes a route or network more efficient to operate. Pooling passengers at a hub can make more frequent service economically viable.
Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport: Atlanta’s principal commercial airport and a major hub for Delta Air Lines. Delta coordinates a large network of domestic and international connections through Atlanta.
Connecting flight: A journey that requires passengers to change aircraft or flights at an intermediate airport. Connections let a hub combine passengers traveling along different routes.
Feeder flight: A flight that carries passengers from a smaller market to a larger airport for onward travel. Feeder routes supply passengers to longer-distance flights departing from a hub.
Direct flight: A flight that travels from its origin to its destination without a change of aircraft, possibly with an intermediate stop. Direct service avoids the transfer that a hub itinerary typically requires.
Airport congestion: Delays and capacity constraints that occur when demand for airport operations exceeds available infrastructure or airspace. Concentrated arrival and departure waves can intensify pressure on hub capacity.
Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport: A major airport between Dallas and Fort Worth that serves as a principal hub for American Airlines. American Airlines uses its central location to connect cities across the United States and beyond.
