Ajatashatru

Ajatashatru was a king of Magadha in the 5th century BCE who expanded the kingdom and is associated with the development of Pataliputra as its capital.

Bimbisara: Bimbisara was an early king of Magadha, traditionally identified as Ajatashatru’s father. His reign preceded Ajatashatru’s and figures in accounts of the succession that brought Ajatashatru to power.
Vajji confederacy: The Vajji confederacy was a coalition of clans in northern India, with the Licchavis among its leading members. Ajatashatru’s prolonged war against this rival tested Magadha’s capacity to overcome a confederated polity.
Gautama Buddha: Gautama Buddha was an ancient Indian teacher whose teachings became the foundation of Buddhism. Buddhist texts portray Ajatashatru as a ruler who met the Buddha and later supported the Buddhist community.
First Buddhist council: The First Buddhist Council is a traditional gathering said to have recited and organized the Buddha’s teachings after his death. Buddhist tradition says Ajatashatru sponsored the gathering at Rajagriha.
Haryanka dynasty: The Haryanka dynasty was an early ruling dynasty of Magadha in ancient India. Ajatashatru belonged to this dynasty, which established Magadha’s early imperial power.
Kosala: Kosala was an ancient kingdom in northern India and a major rival of Magadha. Conflict and shifting alliances with Kosala shaped Magadha’s expansion during Ajatashatru’s era.
Mahavira: Mahavira was an ancient Indian ascetic and teacher revered as the twenty-fourth Tirthankara in Jainism. Jain traditions place Ajatashatru within the same political and religious world as Mahavira.
Samannaphala Sutta: The Samannaphala Sutta is a Buddhist discourse describing the benefits of the contemplative life through accounts of rival teachers. Its account of Ajatashatru’s encounter with the Buddha offers a canonical portrait of the king.
Magadha: Magadha was an ancient kingdom in what is now Bihar, India, that became a major power in the eastern Gangetic plain. Its territory and resources formed the base of Ajatashatru’s expanding kingdom.
Ratha-musala: Ratha-musala, or scythed chariot, is a war machine attributed to Ajatashatru in Buddhist accounts. The story illustrates how later traditions represented the military technology of his campaigns.
