Akkadian Empire

The Akkadian Empire was a Mesopotamian state that united much of the region under Sargon and his successors during the third millennium BCE. It is often regarded as one of history’s earliest territorial empires.

Sargon of Akkad: Sargon was the founder and first ruler of the Akkadian Empire, reigning in the twenty-fourth and twenty-third centuries BCE. His conquests established Akkadian rule across much of Mesopotamia.
Akkadian kingship: Akkadian kingship was the royal institution through which Akkadian rulers claimed authority over cities and territories. Royal power connected local administration to the empire’s central authority.
Rimush: Rimush was a son of Sargon and an early ruler of the Akkadian Empire. His reign faced revolts that tested the empire soon after its founder’s death.
Stele of Naram-Sin: The Stele of Naram-Sin is a monumental relief depicting the king’s victory over the Lullubi. Its elevated king and ordered soldiers make imperial hierarchy visible in art.
Kish: Kish was an ancient Mesopotamian city-state in northern Babylonia. Sargon’s early association with Kish links his rise to older traditions of kingship.
Akkadian military: The Akkadian military comprised the forces used by the empire’s rulers to conquer territory and enforce political control. Campaigns and garrisons enabled rulers to control cities beyond Akkad.
Manishtushu: Manishtushu was an Akkadian king, generally placed after Rimush and before Naram-Sin. His reign continued the dynasty between its early crises and later expansion.
Akkadian art: Akkadian art is the visual culture produced under the Akkadian dynasty in Mesopotamia. Royal monuments and seals expressed the dynasty’s power and political ideals.
Uruk: Uruk was an ancient Sumerian city-state in southern Mesopotamia, among the region’s largest urban centers. Sargon’s victory over its ruler helped secure his dominance in southern Mesopotamia.
Akkadian governors: Akkadian governors were officials who administered cities and territories on behalf of the empire’s rulers. Provincial officials translated royal authority into local administration.
