Al-Farazdaq

Al-Farazdaq was an Arab poet of the Umayyad period, renowned for satire, tribal invective, and a long poetic rivalry with Jarir.

Jarir: Jarir was an Umayyad-era Arab poet famed for satire and his poetic rivalry with Al-Farazdaq. Their decades-long exchange of praise and invective became the defining contest of Al-Farazdaq’s career.
Hijāʾ: Hijāʾ is the Arabic poetic genre of satire and personal or tribal invective. It names the tradition in which Al-Farazdaq’s attacks on rivals became famous.
Naqāʾid: Naqāʾid are paired Arabic satirical poems in which poets answer one another in matching meters and rhymes. Al-Farazdaq’s exchanges with Jarir are the genre’s best-known body of work.

Nasīb: Nasīb is the amatory or elegiac opening section of a classical Arabic ode. Al-Farazdaq’s long odes draw on this inherited opening convention.
