Al Khalifa

The Al Khalifa is Bahrain’s ruling dynasty, established on the island in 1783 after taking power from the Persian-linked Nasrids.

Bani Utbah: An Arab tribal confederation whose members migrated from central Arabia to the Persian Gulf. The Al Khalifa emerged from this confederation before moving to Bahrain.
Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa: Bahrain’s emir from 1961 to 1999, who oversaw independence and the formation of the modern state. His reign bridged British withdrawal and Bahrain’s independent monarchy.
Monarchy of Bahrain: Bahrain’s system of government, headed by a hereditary king from the Al Khalifa family. It defines the constitutional structure through which the family rules.
Bahraini uprising of 2011: A protest movement in Bahrain during the 2011 Arab uprisings, met with a government crackdown and regional military intervention. The uprising challenged Al Khalifa rule and exposed deep disputes over representation.
Bahraini opposition: Political groups and activists in Bahrain who challenge government policies or advocate changes to the political system. Opposition movements have disputed the concentration of authority in the Al Khalifa monarchy.
Zubarah: A historic fortified settlement and trading port on Qatar’s northwestern coast. The Al Khalifa established their base there before conquering Bahrain.
Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa: Bahrain’s king since 2002, after serving as emir from 1999. He transformed the emirate into a kingdom and has led the current political system.
Constitution of Bahrain: Bahrain’s supreme legal document, establishing the state’s institutions and powers. Its provisions formally allocate extensive authority to the king and appointed bodies.
Bahraini constitutional referendum of 2001: A referendum in which Bahrainis overwhelmingly approved a National Action Charter promising political reform. The charter initiated reforms under King Hamad while preserving hereditary rule.
Al Wefaq: A Bahraini Shia political society that became the country’s largest opposition group before its dissolution in 2016. Its electoral participation and later confrontation with the government illustrate the limits of opposition politics.
