Al-Kindi

Al-Kindi was a ninth-century Arab philosopher and polymath who helped introduce Greek philosophy and science into the Islamic world through original works and translations.

Al-Ma'mun: The Abbasid caliph who ruled from 813 to 833 and supported scholarship and translation in Baghdad. Al-Kindi’s intellectual world grew from Abbasid court patronage of Greek learning.
Greek philosophy: The philosophical traditions that developed in ancient Greece, including Platonism, Aristotelianism, and Stoicism. Al-Kindi treated this inherited body of thought as a source of demonstrable knowledge.
On First Philosophy: Al-Kindi’s philosophical treatise arguing for the unity of the First Truth and the value of philosophy. This work shows how he used philosophical reasoning to defend divine unity.
Cryptanalysis: The analysis of encrypted messages to recover their plaintext without knowing the key. Al-Kindi’s treatise on deciphering encrypted writing is an early systematic account of frequency analysis.
Falsafa: The Arabic-language philosophical tradition that adapted Greek philosophy within Islamic intellectual life. Al-Kindi’s works helped launch this tradition as a sustained program of inquiry.
House of Wisdom: A scholarly institution in Baghdad associated with the collection, translation, and study of Greek and other learning. It represents the Baghdad translation culture in which Al-Kindi’s circle worked.
Arabic translations of Greek works: Arabic versions of Greek philosophical and scientific texts produced during the early Abbasid period. These translations made many of Al-Kindi’s principal sources accessible in his scholarly language.
First cause: The ultimate source that explains the existence and order of everything else. Al-Kindi used the first cause to connect metaphysical explanation with belief in God.
Frequency analysis: A method for breaking substitution ciphers by comparing symbol frequencies with those of a language. Al-Kindi described using letter frequencies to decode Arabic ciphertext.
