Al-Mu'tasim

Al-Mu'tasim was the eighth Abbasid caliph, ruling from 833 to 842. He founded Samarra as a new capital and expanded the caliphate’s reliance on Turkish military slaves.

Samarra: A city in Iraq that served as the Abbasid capital from 836 to 892. Al-Mu'tasim founded it as a new seat of government and military power.
Battle of Amorium: An Abbasid victory over the Byzantine Empire at Amorium in 838. Al-Mu'tasim personally led the campaign that captured this major Byzantine city.
Al-Ma'mun: The seventh Abbasid caliph, who ruled from 813 to 833 and was Al-Mu'tasim’s half-brother. Al-Ma'mun’s death in 833 brought Al-Mu'tasim to the caliphate.
