Al-Muwatta

Al-Muwatta is a second-century Islamic legal and hadith compilation by Malik ibn Anas. It combines reports attributed to the Prophet and early authorities with Malik’s legal judgments and practice associated with Medina.

Malik ibn Anas: Malik ibn Anas was an eighth-century Muslim jurist and hadith scholar who founded the Maliki school. He compiled Al-Muwatta and supplied many of its legal judgments.

Hadith: Hadith are reports about the sayings, actions, and tacit approvals of the Prophet Muhammad. Prophetic reports form one of the work’s central kinds of material.
Amal ahl al-Madina: Amal ahl al-Madina is the legal practice inherited by the people of Medina. Malik often treats Medinan practice as evidence when assessing legal questions.
Abbasid Caliphate: The Abbasid Caliphate was a dynasty that ruled much of the Islamic world from 750 to 1258. Malik compiled the work during the first generations of Abbasid rule.
Sahih Muslim: Sahih Muslim is a ninth-century Sunni hadith collection compiled by Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj. Its report-centered structure contrasts with Al-Muwatta’s integration of legal opinions.
Fiqh: Fiqh is the human understanding and interpretation of Islamic law. The work presents legal reasoning alongside reports, making it an early fiqh text.
Sunnah: Sunnah is the normative example associated with the Prophet Muhammad in Islamic tradition. The work records Prophetic precedent as a source of legal guidance.
