Knowra Alan Brooke Alan Brooke Alan Brooke, 1st Viscount Alanbrooke, was a British field marshal who served as Chief of the Imperial General Staff during much of World War II. He helped shape Allied strategy and advised Winston Churchill on military policy.
Winston Churchill : British prime minister who led the United Kingdom through most of the Second World War. As prime minister, Churchill relied on Brooke’s military counsel and often argued with him over strategy.
Chief of the Imperial General Staff : The senior professional military appointment in the British Army, responsible for advising the government and directing army policy. This office gave Brooke authority over army planning and a central role in advising Churchill.
Operation Torch : The Allied invasion of French North Africa, launched in November 1942. Brooke supported the North African operation as an alternative to an early cross-Channel invasion.
