Åland

Åland is an autonomous, Swedish-speaking archipelago of Finland in the Baltic Sea, between Sweden and mainland Finland. Its self-government and demilitarized status are protected by international agreements.

Åland Parliament: Åland’s elected legislature, which exercises powers assigned to the autonomous region. It makes regional self-government concrete through laws and budgets.
Treaty of Fredrikshamn: The 1809 treaty that ended the Finnish War and transferred Finland and Åland from Sweden to Russia. It began the islands’ separation from Sweden.
Julius Sundblom: An Ålandic journalist and politician who led the movement advocating the islands’ union with Sweden. He became the best-known local advocate for Åland’s return to Sweden.
Demilitarization of the Åland Islands: The international prohibition on maintaining military forces or fortifications in the Åland Islands. It gives the archipelago a security status distinct from much of the Baltic region.

Carl Enckell: A Finnish diplomat who represented Finland in international negotiations, including the Åland question. He defended Finland’s sovereignty during the dispute’s international settlement.
