Knowra Alban Berg Alban Berg Alban Berg (1885–1935) was an Austrian composer of the Second Viennese School. His music combines atonal and twelve-tone techniques with lyrical expression, most famously in the operas Wozzeck and Lulu and the Violin Concerto.
Wozzeck : An opera by Berg, completed in 1922, about a soldier driven to murder and madness by poverty and abuse. Its fractured scenes and expressive atonality established Berg’s distinctive approach to opera.
Atonality : Music that does not establish a single pitch as its tonal center. Berg used atonal writing while preserving expressive gestures and traces of tonal orientation.
Arnold Schoenberg : An Austrian composer who developed atonality and the twelve-tone method and taught Berg and Anton Webern. Schoenberg’s teaching supplied Berg’s central compositional methods and modernist artistic circle.
