Alberico Gentili

Alberico Gentili (1552–1608) was an Italian jurist who became Regius Professor of Civil Law at Oxford and helped shape early modern international law.

Roman law: The legal system developed in ancient Rome and later adapted across continental Europe. Its juristic methods and categories supplied tools Gentili used to reason about relations among states.
De iure belli: Gentili’s three-book treatise, published in 1598, examining the law of war. It gathers his sustained argument that war could be analyzed through legal rules.
Italian Reformation: The spread of Protestant ideas and reform movements in Italy during the sixteenth century. Religious conflict in Italy preceded the Gentili family’s departure for Protestant territories.
