Albert Claude

Albert Claude (1899–1983) was a Belgian-American cell biologist who developed cell fractionation methods and used electron microscopy to reveal cellular structure.

Cell fractionation: A laboratory method that separates cell components into fractions for biochemical study. Claude pioneered methods for isolating cellular components while preserving their biochemical activity.
Differential centrifugation: A separation method that spins cell extracts at successively higher speeds to collect components by size and density. Claude used sequential centrifugation to isolate distinct fractions from cell extracts.
University of Liège: A Belgian public research university founded in Liège in 1817. Claude studied medicine there before pursuing laboratory research.
1974 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine: The Nobel award shared by Albert Claude, Christian de Duve, and George Emil Palade for discoveries about cell organization. The award recognized Claude’s role in establishing modern cell biology.
Electron microscope: A microscope that uses a beam of electrons to resolve structures smaller than those visible with light. Claude used electron microscopy to examine cell structures beyond the reach of light microscopes.
Cell homogenization: The disruption of cells to release their contents into a suspension for analysis. Homogenizing tissue supplied the extracts that Claude separated into cellular fractions.
Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research: A New York biomedical research institute founded in 1901, now known as Rockefeller University. Claude conducted much of his influential cell research at the institute.
Christian de Duve: A Belgian cytologist and biochemist who discovered lysosomes and peroxisomes and advanced cell fractionation. De Duve built on fractionation methods associated with Claude’s research.
Cell biology: The study of cells, including their structure, function, interactions, and life cycles. Claude’s work helped establish cell biology as an experimental discipline.
Mitochondrion: A membrane-bound organelle that generates most cellular ATP through oxidative phosphorylation. Claude’s fractionation work helped isolate mitochondria for biochemical investigation.
