Albert I of Belgium

Albert I was King of the Belgians from 1909 until his death in 1934. He became a symbol of Belgian resistance during World War I by remaining with his army after the German invasion.

Battle of the Yser: A 1914 battle in which Belgian forces halted the German advance along the Yser River. Albert commanded Belgian forces during this defense, which helped preserve a Belgian-held front.
