Alborz Mountains

The Alborz Mountains are a range in northern Iran, extending along the southern coast of the Caspian Sea. They include Mount Damavand, Iran’s highest peak.

Mount Damavand: A dormant volcano in the Alborz Mountains and the highest peak in Iran. Its summit is the range’s defining high point.
Caspian hyrcanian mixed forests: A terrestrial ecoregion of temperate broadleaf and mixed forests along the southern Caspian coast. These forests occupy the humid northern foothills of the Alborz.
Tehran: The capital and largest city of Iran, located at the southern foot of the Alborz Mountains. The mountains constrain the city’s northern growth and influence its water and hazard planning.
Alborz orogeny: The mountain-building history that uplifted and deformed the Alborz range in northern Iran. This geological history explains the range’s structure and high relief.
Caspian Sea: The world’s largest inland body of water, bordered by five countries. The Alborz run along its southern shore.

Arabian–Eurasian collision: The ongoing convergence between the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates. This collision supplies the compression responsible for Alborz uplift.
Iranian Plateau: A high plateau region spanning much of Iran and neighboring countries. The Alborz form a northern barrier to this interior highland.
Rain shadow: A dry region on the leeward side of a mountain range, formed when mountains block moist air. The Alborz help separate Caspian moisture from the drier Iranian interior.
