Albrecht von Graefe

Albrecht von Graefe (1828–1870) was a German ophthalmologist who helped establish modern ophthalmology, advanced eye surgery, and founded the German Ophthalmological Society.

Hermann von Helmholtz: A German physicist and physician who invented the ophthalmoscope in 1851. Graefe recognized how Helmholtz’s instrument could transform examination of the living eye.
Iridectomy: Surgical removal of part of the iris. Graefe introduced peripheral iridectomy as an operation for acute glaucoma.
Ophthalmoscope: An instrument that illuminates and magnifies structures inside the eye. It let Graefe inspect the retina directly, expanding diagnosis beyond external eye disease.
