Albrecht von Wallenstein

Albrecht von Wallenstein (1583–1634) was a Bohemian nobleman and imperial general who raised and commanded major armies for the Habsburg emperor during the Thirty Years’ War. His wealth, military power, and independent diplomacy made him both indispensable and suspect at court.

Ferdinand II, Holy Roman Emperor: The Habsburg emperor who ruled from 1619 to 1637 and fought to restore Catholic authority in the empire. Wallenstein’s military fortunes depended on Ferdinand II’s commissions and confidence.
Thirty Years’ War: A series of conflicts fought in Central Europe from 1618 to 1648, involving religious, dynastic, and political struggles. The war created the imperial demand that gave Wallenstein room to build an unusually large army.

Mercenary: A combatant who serves in an armed force for financial reward rather than as a citizen or regular national conscript. His forces included many soldiers recruited through the paid military labor market of the period.
