Alcibiades

Alcibiades (c. 450–404 BCE) was an Athenian statesman and general whose shifting alliances shaped the Peloponnesian War. Plato portrays him as an associate of Socrates in several dialogues.

Sicilian Expedition: An Athenian invasion of Sicily launched in 415 BCE that ended in catastrophic defeat. Alcibiades helped persuade Athens to invade, then was recalled before the campaign’s outcome.
Socrates: An Athenian philosopher who questioned people about virtue, knowledge, and how to live. Plato presents Socrates as Alcibiades’ intimate but unsuccessful moral mentor.
Peloponnesian War: A prolonged conflict between Athens and Sparta and their allies, fought from 431 to 404 BCE. The war created the crises in which Alcibiades repeatedly changed sides and returned to power.
Symposium: A philosophical dialogue by Plato depicting a banquet where participants give speeches on love. Alcibiades enters late and praises Socrates while recounting his own failed attempts to seduce him.
Herms: Four-sided stone pillars, often bearing the head of Hermes, placed throughout ancient Greek cities. Their mutilation in 415 BCE triggered the religious scandal that led to Alcibiades’ recall.
Pericles: An Athenian statesman who led Athens during much of the fifth century BCE. Pericles was Alcibiades’ guardian and a formative figure in his political world.
Athenian democracy: A system of direct citizen participation in political decisions in classical Athens. Alcibiades built influence through public persuasion and elected military commands.
Alcibiades I: A dialogue attributed to Plato in which Socrates challenges the young Alcibiades’ political readiness. It stages the tension between Alcibiades’ ambition and his lack of self-knowledge.
Battle of Cyzicus: A 410 BCE Athenian naval victory over Sparta near Cyzicus on the Propontis. Alcibiades returned to command and helped secure this major victory.
Nicias: An Athenian general and politician known for caution during the Peloponnesian War. Nicias opposed the Sicilian expedition that Alcibiades energetically advocated.
