Alexander Grothendieck

Alexander Grothendieck (1928–2014) was a German-born French mathematician who reshaped algebraic geometry and made major contributions to homological algebra and functional analysis.

Scheme (mathematics): A geometric space built from commutative rings, allowing algebraic geometry to handle arithmetic and nilpotent information. Grothendieck’s scheme theory replaced varieties with a broader language for arithmetic geometry.
Grothendieck topology: A generalized notion of covering that defines sheaves on categories beyond ordinary topological spaces. It enabled cohomology theories for geometric settings without conventional open-set covers.
