Alexander Island

Alexander Island is a large island off the Antarctic Peninsula, separated from the mainland by George VI Sound and the Wilkins Ice Shelf. It is mostly ice-covered and has a mountainous interior.

Antarctic Peninsula: The long, mountainous peninsula extending north from West Antarctica toward South America. Alexander Island lies just west of the peninsula’s southern portion.
Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen: A Russian naval officer who led an Antarctic expedition from 1819 to 1821. His expedition sighted the island in 1821 and named it Alexander I Land.
Douglas Range: A mountain range running along much of Alexander Island in Antarctica. It forms the island’s dominant mountainous spine.
Antarctic field camp: A temporary or permanent research base used for scientific work in Antarctica. Field camps support measurements and geological surveys in the island’s remote interior.
George VI Sound: A sea-filled channel between Alexander Island and the Antarctic Peninsula, largely covered by the George VI Ice Shelf. It forms the principal separation between the island and the mainland.
Alexander I of Russia: Emperor of Russia from 1801 to 1825, who led the country during the Napoleonic Wars. The island’s original name honored the Russian emperor.
Mount Stephenson: A prominent mountain in the Douglas Range of Alexander Island. Its summit is among the island’s best-known high points.
Antarctic geology: The study of Antarctica’s rocks, structures, geological history, and resources. Alexander Island’s exposed mountains preserve evidence of regional geological history.
Wilkins Ice Shelf: A floating ice shelf in the Bellingshausen Sea, connected to Alexander Island and the Antarctic Peninsula region. Its ice bridges have at times connected Alexander Island to nearby land.
Edward Bransfield: A British naval officer who charted parts of the Antarctic Peninsula region in 1820. His early surveys helped establish the geography around the island.
