Alexander Selkirk

Alexander Selkirk was a Scottish sailor marooned alone on an uninhabited Pacific island from 1704 to 1709. His survival became a celebrated source for Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe.

William Dampier: William Dampier was an English explorer, navigator, and author who made several voyages around the world. Dampier’s account of the Pacific voyage helped bring Selkirk’s story into print.

Edward Cooke: Edward Cooke was an English sailor and writer who recounted Woodes Rogers’s privateering voyage. His voyage narrative offered an early published account of Selkirk’s island life.
