Alexander von Humboldt

Alexander von Humboldt (1769–1859) was a German naturalist and explorer whose measurements and writings connected climate, geography, and living organisms. His work helped establish biogeography and influenced physical geography and ecology.

Biogeography: The study of the geographic distribution of organisms across space and time. Humboldt’s comparisons of plants across regions helped establish this field.
Chimborazo: An Ecuadorian volcano whose vegetation zones Humboldt documented during his 1802 ascent. Humboldt used its changing elevation to compare plant communities and climate.
Aimé Bonpland: A French botanist and explorer who accompanied Humboldt on his American expedition from 1799 to 1804. Bonpland collected and identified many plants during their joint travels.
Humboldt's American expedition: Humboldt and Aimé Bonpland’s scientific journey through Spanish America from 1799 to 1804. Field observations from this expedition supplied much of his evidence about nature’s geographic patterns.
Environmental determinism: The theory that physical environments determine human societies and their development. Humboldt linked environments and life without reducing human history to geographic causes.
Physical geography: The study of Earth’s natural features and processes, including climate, landforms, water, and vegetation. Humboldt treated these features as interacting parts of a connected Earth.
Plant geography: The study of how plant distributions vary across geographic regions and environmental conditions. Humboldt mapped plants against altitude, temperature, and location.
Charles Darwin: An English naturalist whose theory of evolution by natural selection transformed biology. Darwin read Humboldt’s travel writing and later recalled its influence on his scientific ambitions.
Voyage aux régions équinoxiales du Nouveau Continent: Humboldt and Bonpland’s multivolume account of their travels in Spanish America, published from 1807 onward. Its observations and illustrations carried the expedition’s findings to a broad scientific audience.
Nature writing: Literary nonfiction that describes the natural world and reflects on human relationships with it. Humboldt’s vivid travel prose helped make scientific observation compelling to general audiences.
