Alexandre Brongniart

Alexandre Brongniart (1770–1847) was a French chemist, mineralogist, and geologist who co-founded the geological study of the Paris Basin and directed the Sèvres porcelain factory.

Paris Basin: A sedimentary basin in northern France containing a thick sequence of fossil-bearing strata. Brongniart helped establish its geological succession through fieldwork with Georges Cuvier.
Jean-Baptiste d'Omalius d'Halloy: A Belgian geologist who helped establish geological mapping and classification in the early nineteenth century. His regional mapping continued the kind of geological synthesis Brongniart pursued in France.
Fossil: Preserved remains, traces, or impressions of organisms from the geological past. Fossils let Brongniart and Cuvier distinguish strata by the organisms preserved within them.
Sèvres – Cité de la céramique: A French national institution preserving and presenting the collections and history of Sèvres ceramics. It preserves the manufactory’s artistic and technical legacy during and after Brongniart’s direction.
Georges Cuvier: A French naturalist who founded comparative anatomy and helped establish vertebrate paleontology. His collaboration with Brongniart made Paris Basin fossils evidence for changing geological environments.
William Smith: An English surveyor and geologist who used fossils to identify and correlate rock strata. Smith independently developed fossil-based stratigraphic correlation alongside Brongniart’s Paris Basin work.
Superposition (geology): The principle that, in an undisturbed sequence, older sedimentary layers lie beneath younger ones. It provides a basic ordering framework for the layers Brongniart studied in the Paris Basin.
Porcelain painting: The decoration of ceramic surfaces with pigments, often followed by firing to fix the colors. Sèvres production under Brongniart combined material science with refined decorative techniques.
Stratigraphy: The study of rock layers, their sequence, and their relationships across time and space. Brongniart’s basin research helped make layered rocks a tool for reconstructing Earth history.
Élie de Beaumont: A French geologist known for geological mapping and theories of mountain formation. He belonged to the next generation of French geologists shaped by the emerging stratigraphic science.
