Alexandre Kojève

Alexandre Kojève was a Russian-born French philosopher whose 1933–1939 lectures on Hegel shaped twentieth-century French philosophy. His interpretation made the master–slave struggle and the end of history central themes.

Phenomenology of Spirit: Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel’s 1807 philosophical work traces consciousness through successive forms toward knowledge of itself. Kojève’s Paris lectures interpreted this work as a drama of desire, recognition, and historical struggle.
Raymond Queneau: A French novelist and poet who attended Kojève’s Paris lectures and later edited their published version. Queneau preserved the seminars as a book, giving Kojève’s oral teaching lasting reach.
Desire (philosophy): A philosophical concept for directed wanting, especially when its object is another person’s recognition. Kojève treats desire for another’s desire as the force that makes human life historical.

Eric Voegelin: A German-American political philosopher who criticized modern ideologies that claim to fulfill history. Voegelin’s critique of political salvation challenged the kind of closure Kojève assigned to modern history.
