Alexandru Ioan Cuza

Alexandru Ioan Cuza was the first ruler of the united principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia, reigning from 1859 until his forced abdication in 1866.

Secularization of Monastic Estates: The 1863 Romanian law that transferred extensive estates held by Orthodox monasteries to the state. Cuza’s government used it to bring church-held land and wealth under state control.
Wallachia: A historical principality north of the Danube that became part of modern Romania. Cuza ruled Wallachia alongside Moldavia after being elected in both principalities.
