Alexis Carrel

Alexis Carrel (1873–1944) was a French surgeon and biologist whose methods for joining blood vessels advanced vascular surgery. He received the 1912 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Charles Claude Guthrie: An American physiologist who studied vascular surgery and transplantation with Alexis Carrel. Their experiments at the University of Chicago helped establish Carrel’s early surgical methods.
Vascular anastomosis: The surgical joining of two blood vessels to restore or redirect blood flow. Carrel refined techniques for connecting vessels with minimal leakage and obstruction.
Lyon: A major city in southeastern France and a historical center of medicine and education. Carrel studied medicine in Lyon and began his surgical career there.
Tissue culture: The growth and maintenance of cells or tissues outside an organism under controlled conditions. Carrel’s laboratory methods helped establish tissue culture as a research practice.
Simon Flexner: An American physician and pathologist who directed the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research. Flexner recruited Carrel to the institute, where he pursued vascular surgery and tissue culture.
Triangulation method: A method of joining tubular structures by placing three guiding stitches before completing the seam. Carrel used this approach to align vessel edges and distribute tension during suturing.
Presidential assassination of William McKinley: The 1901 killing of United States President William McKinley by Leon Czolgosz. Carrel later said the inadequate treatment of McKinley’s wounds influenced his interest in vascular surgery.
Organ preservation: Methods for maintaining organs outside the body before transplantation or experimental use. Carrel’s perfusion experiments helped shape attempts to sustain isolated organs.
Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research: A biomedical research institution founded in New York in 1901, now called Rockefeller University. Carrel conducted much of his influential research there after joining in 1906.
Vascular surgery: Surgery involving blood vessels, including their repair, reconstruction, and rerouting. Carrel’s methods helped make direct operations on arteries and veins practical.
