Alexis Clairaut

Alexis Clairaut (1713–1765) was a French mathematician whose work connected Earth’s rotation and gravitational attraction to its equatorial bulge.

Oblate spheroid: An ellipsoid flattened at its poles and widened at its equator. This shape captures the polar flattening Clairaut sought to explain.
