Alhambra Decree

The 1492 edict of Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile ordering Jews to leave their realms unless they converted to Christianity.

Reconquista: The centuries-long expansion of Christian kingdoms into Muslim-ruled Iberia, ending with Granada’s conquest in 1492. Its final campaign created the political setting in which the decree was issued.
Edict of Expulsion: The royal order dated 31 March 1492 requiring Jews in Castile and Aragon to leave by the end of July or convert. This is the decree’s operative command and deadline.
Sephardic diaspora: The dispersal of Iberian Jews and their descendants into communities across the Mediterranean, North Africa, and Europe. Many exiles established communities in new lands after leaving Iberia.

Ferdinand II of Aragon: King of Aragon from 1479 to 1516, who ruled jointly with Isabella I of Castile. He issued the decree with Isabella as a joint monarch.
Sephardic Jews: Jews whose historical communities originated in the Iberian Peninsula and their descendants. The order targeted the Jewish communities from which Sephardic diaspora communities formed.
