Ali al-Sistani

Ali al-Sistani is an Iranian-born Iraqi Grand Ayatollah and leading Twelver Shia authority. Based in Najaf, he has shaped Iraq’s religious life and political development through teaching, rulings, and public interventions.

Abu al-Qasim al-Khoei: An Iraqi Shia Grand Ayatollah who led Najaf’s religious establishment and taught Ali al-Sistani. Al-Sistani succeeded his teacher al-Khoei as Najaf’s leading religious authority after al-Khoei’s death in 1992.
Iraqi Constitution of 2005: The constitution adopted by Iraq after the 2003 invasion and approved in a national referendum in 2005. Al-Sistani pressed for an elected assembly to draft Iraq’s constitution, rather than an occupation-appointed process.
