Ali Mughayat Syah

Ali Mughayat Syah was the first sultan of Aceh, founding the Aceh Sultanate and ruling from about 1514 until his death in 1530.

Aceh Sultanate: A sultanate based in northern Sumatra that became a major regional power in the Malay world. Ali Mughayat Syah established the polity whose institutions and influence grew after his reign.
Portuguese Malacca: The Portuguese-controlled port of Malacca, captured in 1511 and held until 1641. Aceh’s rise challenged the Portuguese commercial and political position across the Strait of Malacca.
Iskandar Muda: A sultan of Aceh who ruled from 1607 to 1636, during the sultanate’s greatest territorial expansion. His reign shows how far the state founded by Ali Mughayat Syah later extended its power.

Aceh War: A prolonged conflict between the Dutch and the Aceh Sultanate, beginning with the Dutch invasion of 1873. The war’s long resistance reflected the political institution and identity established by Aceh’s early rulers.
Alauddin al-Kahar: A sultan of Aceh who ruled in the mid-sixteenth century and expanded the sultanate’s influence. His reign extended the political and military consolidation begun by Ali Mughayat Syah.
Aceh: A region and province at the northern tip of Sumatra, Indonesia. The coastal polity he unified and ruled became the base of his sultanate.
Strait of Malacca: A narrow sea passage between the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra connecting the Indian Ocean with the South China Sea. Aceh’s campaigns aimed to strengthen its position along this vital maritime route.
