Alicyclic compound

An alicyclic compound is a nonaromatic organic compound with carbon atoms arranged in one or more rings. Its rings may be saturated or contain carbon–carbon double or triple bonds.

Cycloalkane: A saturated hydrocarbon whose carbon atoms form one or more rings. Cycloalkanes are the saturated members of the alicyclic family.
Cyclohexane conformation: The three-dimensional shapes adopted by cyclohexane, especially its chair and boat forms. Its chair conformation illustrates how a common alicyclic ring minimizes strain.
Cyclohexane: A saturated six-carbon ring used chiefly as an industrial solvent and precursor to nylon intermediates. Cyclohexane is a major industrial example of a saturated alicyclic compound.
Aromatic compound: A cyclic, conjugated compound with unusual stability associated with delocalized pi electrons. Aromatic compounds are cyclic too, but their defining electronic structure excludes them from the alicyclic class.
Cycloalkene: A cyclic hydrocarbon containing at least one carbon–carbon double bond in a ring. Cycloalkenes show how unsaturation changes an alicyclic ring.
Baeyer strain theory: A historical theory that attributed cyclic compound stability to deviations from tetrahedral bond angles. It links ring size to strain, although it overlooked nonplanar conformations.
Cyclopentadiene: A five-membered cyclic diene that readily forms the dicyclopentadiene dimer and serves as a Diels–Alder reagent. Its reactive unsaturated ring makes it a useful building block for cyclic synthesis.
Acyclic compound: An organic compound whose carbon framework contains no rings. Acyclic compounds provide the open-chain counterpart to alicyclic structures.
Cycloalkyne: A cyclic hydrocarbon containing a carbon–carbon triple bond in a ring. Cycloalkynes are a less common unsaturated branch of alicyclic chemistry.
Bredt's rule: A rule that restricts placement of a double bond at a bridgehead in small bridged bicyclic compounds. It shows how a rigid alicyclic framework can prevent ordinary alkene geometry.
