Alimentary canal

The continuous digestive passage through which food travels from the mouth to the anus. Its organs digest food, absorb nutrients, and eliminate waste.

Mouth: The opening and cavity where food enters the digestive tract and is mechanically broken down. Chewing and saliva begin processing food before it enters the canal.
Digestive system: The organs and structures that ingest food, digest it, absorb nutrients, and eliminate waste. The alimentary canal is its continuous passage, supported by accessory organs.
Digestion: The mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into substances the body can absorb. This is the canal’s central transformation of food into usable nutrients.
Incomplete digestive system: A digestive arrangement with one opening serving as both mouth and exit. Unlike a canal with separate ends, it cannot move food in one direction through a complete passage.

Mucosa: The innermost lining of the digestive tract, specialized for secretion, protection, and absorption. Its changing structure lets different canal regions perform distinct tasks.
