Alipay

Alipay is a Chinese digital payment platform operated by Ant Group. It supports mobile and online payments alongside services such as money transfers and financial management.

QR code payment: A payment method that uses a machine-readable QR code to initiate or receive a transaction. Alipay popularized scanning and presenting codes as everyday ways to pay in stores.
Taobao: A Chinese online marketplace launched by Alibaba Group in 2003. Alipay was created to make transactions on Taobao more trustworthy.
Mobile payment: A payment made or authorized through a mobile device. Alipay is one of the largest platforms for mobile payments in China.
WeChat Pay: A digital payment service integrated into Tencent’s WeChat messaging and social platform. It is Alipay’s principal domestic rival and is embedded in a different super app.
Mobile wallet: A digital service that stores payment credentials and supports transactions through a mobile device. Alipay functions as a mobile wallet for in-person and online purchases.
Alibaba Group: A Chinese multinational technology company founded by Jack Ma and partners in 1999. Alibaba launched Alipay to support commerce across its online marketplaces.
Super app: A mobile application that combines payments with multiple services or third-party offerings. Alipay’s app brings payments together with services such as transport and shopping.
UnionPay: A Chinese bank-card network that operates payment services for cardholders and merchants. Its card-network model contrasts with Alipay’s app-centered digital wallet.
Payment gateway: A service that transmits payment information between a merchant and financial institutions. Alipay processes online checkout payments for merchants.
Ant Group: A Chinese financial technology company that operates Alipay and provides other digital financial services. Alipay became the flagship platform of the company spun out from Alibaba’s financial operations.
