Allan Pinkerton

Allan Pinkerton was a Scottish-American detective who founded the Pinkerton National Detective Agency in 1850 and served the Union as an intelligence operative during the American Civil War.

George B. McClellan: A Union general and politician who commanded the Army of the Potomac during part of the Civil War. Pinkerton supplied intelligence to McClellan while serving with the Army of the Potomac.
Pinkerton National Detective Agency: A private detective and security agency founded in Chicago by Allan Pinkerton in 1850. It was the institution Pinkerton established and built into a national operation.
American Civil War intelligence: The collection and use of military and political information by Union and Confederate forces during the Civil War. Pinkerton organized intelligence gathering for the Union early in the war.
