Knowra Allerød oscillation Allerød oscillation The Allerød oscillation was a relatively warm interval in northern Europe near the end of the last glacial period, about 13,900–12,900 years ago. It formed part of the Bølling–Allerød interstadial before abrupt cooling began.
Younger Dryas : A cold interval that interrupted postglacial warming in the Northern Hemisphere, about 12,900–11,700 years ago. Its onset marks the sharp cooling that ended the Allerød.
Last Glacial Period : The most recent interval of repeated ice-sheet growth and retreat, ending with the transition to the present interglacial. The Allerød was a late warm interval within its final deglaciation.
Allerød oscillation in Greenland ice cores : The expression of the late-glacial warm interval in Greenland ice-core climate records. Greenland records offer a high-resolution comparison with northern European evidence.
Hartmut L. von Post : A Swedish geologist and botanist who helped establish pollen analysis as a method for reconstructing past vegetation. His work helped create the pollen-record framework used to distinguish late-glacial intervals.
Bølling oscillation : A warm interval preceding the Allerød during the last deglaciation, especially evident in Greenland and northern Europe. Together with the Allerød, it made up the Bølling–Allerød warm phase.
Last Glacial Maximum : The period when global ice sheets reached their greatest extent during the last glacial period, roughly 26,000–20,000 years ago. It preceded the deglaciation that eventually produced the Allerød.
Meiendorf Interstadial : An early warm phase of the last deglaciation identified in northern European pollen records. It is an earlier regional interstadial in the sequence leading toward the Allerød.
Niels Hartz : A Danish geologist who studied late-glacial deposits and helped define the Allerød interval. His investigations of Danish deposits contributed to the interval’s original identification.
Atlantic meridional overturning circulation : A system of Atlantic Ocean currents that transports heat northward and returns colder water at depth. Changes in this circulation are central to explanations of rapid North Atlantic climate shifts.
Bølling–Allerød : A warm interstadial spanning much of the North Atlantic region from about 14,700 to 12,900 years ago. The Allerød is its later phase in the conventional northern European sequence.
