Allodynia

Allodynia is pain caused by a stimulus that does not normally produce pain. It can arise from ordinary touch, temperature, or movement.

Nociception: The nervous system’s detection and encoding of potentially tissue-damaging stimuli. Allodynia is pain without the normally harmful stimulus that nociception detects.
Pain: An unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with, or resembling that associated with, actual or potential tissue damage. Allodynia is a particular pattern of pain defined by the stimulus that evokes it.
Migraine: A neurological disorder characterized by recurrent attacks of headache and associated symptoms. Skin sensitivity during migraine can make ordinary touch painful.
Mechanical allodynia: Pain caused by a normally nonpainful mechanical stimulus, such as light touch or pressure. This subtype includes pain from brushing the skin or wearing clothing.
Central sensitization: Increased responsiveness of neurons in the central nervous system to sensory input. Amplified central processing can make ordinary touch feel painful.
Hyperalgesia: An increased pain response to a stimulus that normally produces pain. Unlike allodynia, hyperalgesia involves an already painful stimulus.
Postherpetic neuralgia: Persistent neuropathic pain in the area affected by a previous shingles rash. Light contact from clothing can provoke pain in the affected skin.
Thermal allodynia: Pain caused by a temperature that is normally nonpainful. Mild warmth or coolness can evoke pain in this subtype.
Peripheral sensitization: Increased responsiveness of sensory neurons near an injury or site of inflammation. Sensitized peripheral nerves can contribute to pain from light mechanical or thermal stimuli.
Dysesthesia: An unpleasant abnormal sensation, spontaneous or evoked, that may be painful or nonpainful. Allodynia is painful; dysesthesia can describe unpleasant sensations beyond that specific pattern.
