Allometry

Allometry studies how biological traits scale with an organism’s size. It describes changes in body proportions across growth, species, or evolutionary lineages.

Allometric equation: A power-law model relating a biological trait to body size, commonly written y = aM^b. Its exponent quantifies how a trait changes relative to body size.
Body size: A measure of an organism’s overall magnitude, commonly represented by mass, length, or volume. Allometric comparisons depend on how body size is measured.
Bergmann's rule: An ecogeographical pattern in which endothermic animals tend to be larger in colder environments. Body-size variation across climates can alter proportions and heat balance.
Static allometry: The relationship between trait size and body size among individuals within a population at one time. It isolates variation among individuals rather than changes during growth.
Allometric scaling exponent: The exponent in a scaling relationship that measures how rapidly one quantity changes with another. Its value distinguishes proportional growth from disproportionate change.
Morphometrics: The quantitative study of biological form, including shape, size, and their variation. Allometry is one way morphometrics analyzes relationships between size and form.
Allen's rule: An ecogeographical pattern in which animals in cold climates tend to have shorter extremities. It links appendage proportions to heat loss across body sizes and climates.
Evolutionary allometry: The relationship between trait size and body size across species or evolutionary lineages. It concerns evolutionary differences, not an individual’s developmental trajectory.
Geometric similarity: A condition in which shape remains constant as an object changes size, with all lengths scaling proportionally. Allometric growth departs from this constant-proportion baseline.
Isometry: Growth or scaling in which proportions remain constant as size changes. It provides the null case against which allometric change is measured.
