Allyl alcohol

Allyl alcohol is a colorless, flammable organic liquid with formula C₃H₆O and structure CH₂=CHCH₂OH. Its alkene and alcohol groups make it a reactive starting material for polymers and other chemicals.

Allylic position: A carbon atom directly adjacent to a carbon–carbon double bond. The hydroxyl-bearing carbon in allyl alcohol occupies this position, enabling allylic reactions.
Poly(allyl alcohol): A polymer containing repeating units derived from allyl alcohol. It uses the alcohol’s polymerizable double bond while retaining hydroxyl groups for further modification.
Allyl chloride: An organochlorine compound with structure CH₂=CHCH₂Cl, used to make other allyl compounds. Hydrolysis of allyl chloride was an early route to allyl alcohol.
Propargyl alcohol: An unsaturated three-carbon alcohol containing a carbon–carbon triple bond. It shares allylic alcohol’s three-carbon alcohol framework but has a triple rather than double bond.
Alkene: An unsaturated hydrocarbon containing at least one carbon–carbon double bond. Allyl alcohol’s alkene group undergoes addition and polymer-forming reactions.
Glycidol: A three-carbon epoxide bearing a hydroxymethyl group, used as a chemical intermediate. Industrial epoxidation of allyl alcohol provides a route to this versatile intermediate.
Glycerol: A three-carbon alcohol with three hydroxyl groups, found in fats and oils. Allyl alcohol was historically obtained by dehydrating glycerol.
Crotyl alcohol: An unsaturated four-carbon alcohol with structure CH₃CH=CHCH₂OH. Its extra methyl group distinguishes this related allylic alcohol from allyl alcohol.
Alcohol (chemistry): An organic compound containing a hydroxyl group bonded to a saturated carbon atom. Its hydroxyl group gives allyl alcohol alcohol-class reactions alongside alkene chemistry.
Allyl ethers: Organic compounds in which an allyl group is bonded to oxygen in an ether linkage. Allyl alcohol is a feedstock for allyl ethers used in coatings, resins, and synthesis.
