Allyl chloride

Allyl chloride is a colorless, flammable organochlorine liquid with the formula C₃H₅Cl. It is used chiefly to manufacture epichlorohydrin and other chemicals.

Allyl group: A three-carbon substituent, CH₂=CH–CH₂–, containing a carbon–carbon double bond. This unsaturated group gives allyl chloride characteristic reactions at and beside its double bond.
Epoxy resin: A thermosetting polymer containing epoxide-derived linkages, often valued for adhesion and chemical resistance. Epichlorohydrin made from allyl chloride is a major feedstock for epoxy resins.
Propylene: A three-carbon alkene used extensively as a chemical feedstock. Allyl chloride is produced industrially by chlorinating propylene.
Chemical hazard: A property of a substance that can cause harm through exposure or reaction. Allyl chloride combines flammability with toxic and irritating effects.
Nucleophilic substitution: A reaction in which a nucleophile replaces a leaving group bonded to carbon. Substitution of chloride helps convert allyl chloride into other useful compounds.
Bisphenol A: An industrial organic compound used to make polycarbonate and epoxy-resin precursors. It reacts with epichlorohydrin in a widely used route to epoxy-resin precursors.
Free-radical substitution: A reaction in which radicals replace atoms or groups in a molecule. High-temperature chlorination of propylene forms allyl chloride through radical chemistry.
Flammability: The ability of a material to ignite and sustain combustion. Its low flash point makes ignition control essential during storage and use.
Allylic rearrangement: A reaction that shifts a double bond while changing a substituent at an allylic position. The allylic structure can permit products to form at either end of the three-carbon unit.
Glycidyl ether: An ether containing a glycidyl group, which includes an epoxide ring. Epichlorohydrin transfers its glycidyl structure into epoxy-resin and specialty-chemical products.
