Alonso de Ojeda

Alonso de Ojeda was a Spanish explorer and conquistador whose expeditions reached the Caribbean coast of South America. He helped establish Spain’s early colonial foothold in the region.

First voyage of Alonso de Ojeda: Alonso de Ojeda’s 1499–1500 expedition explored the northern coast of South America with Juan de la Cosa and Amerigo Vespucci. This expedition brought Ojeda to the coast later called Venezuela and shaped his claims there.
Juan de la Cosa: A Spanish navigator and cartographer who sailed on voyages to the Americas and made an influential world map in 1500. De la Cosa sailed with Ojeda and mapped coasts they explored together.
Capitulación: A Spanish Crown contract granting an individual authority to explore, conquer, or settle designated overseas territories. Ojeda’s governorships and expeditions depended on agreements of this kind with the Crown.
Venezuela: A country on the northern coast of South America, named by Europeans after the settlement of its Caribbean coast. Ojeda’s 1499 expedition helped give the region its European name through a comparison with Venice.
Coquivacoa expedition: Alonso de Ojeda’s 1502 expedition explored the Gulf of Venezuela and attempted to establish a Spanish settlement. It turned his earlier coastal exploration into an effort at permanent occupation.
Amerigo Vespucci: An Italian navigator whose accounts of voyages to the Americas helped establish the idea that the lands were a new continent. Vespucci accompanied Ojeda’s first expedition along the South American coast.
Governorate of Coquivacoa: A short-lived Spanish territorial grant in northern South America assigned to Alonso de Ojeda in 1501. The grant gave Ojeda a formal basis for his 1502 settlement attempt.
Colonization of the Americas: The sustained settlement and political control of the Americas by European powers beginning in the late 15th century. Ojeda’s ventures formed part of the earliest Spanish expansion onto the mainland.
Santa Cruz colony: A short-lived Spanish settlement founded by Alonso de Ojeda on the Guajira Peninsula in 1502. The colony was the most direct attempt to make Ojeda’s territorial claims durable.
Diego de Nicuesa: A Spanish conquistador who received the neighboring governorship of Veragua in 1508 and led an ill-fated colonizing expedition. Nicuesa’s neighboring grant brought him into conflict with Ojeda over colonial boundaries.
