Alp Arslan

Alp Arslan was the second sultan of the Great Seljuk Empire, ruling from 1063 to 1072. His victory over the Byzantine Empire at Manzikert in 1071 weakened Byzantine control in Anatolia.

Battle of Manzikert: The 1071 battle in which Seljuk forces defeated the Byzantine army and captured Emperor Romanos IV. Alp Arslan’s best-known victory opened Anatolia to increased Turkic migration and settlement.
Seljuk Empire: A medieval empire founded by the Seljuk dynasty, spanning parts of Central Asia, Iran, and the Middle East. Alp Arslan ruled its eastern-centered imperial state and extended its influence westward.
Tughril: A founder of the Great Seljuk Empire who ruled as sultan from 1037 until his death in 1063. His death created the succession struggle that brought Alp Arslan to the throne.
