Alternative civilian service

Alternative civilian service is non-military public service performed instead of compulsory military service, often by people whose beliefs prevent them from serving in the armed forces.

Civilian Conservation Corps: A United States program that employed young men in conservation work during the Great Depression. Conservation work illustrates the kinds of public projects used for civilian service.
Conscription: Compulsory enrollment of people into a country's armed forces. Civilian service exists as an alternative to this military obligation.
Military service: Service in a country's armed forces, including combat and support roles. Civilian service substitutes for this, rather than assigning a military role.
