Alto saxophone

The alto saxophone is a single-reed woodwind instrument pitched in E-flat, smaller and higher in register than the tenor saxophone. Its curved body and conical bore give it a bright, flexible tone.

Single-reed instrument: A wind instrument that produces sound when a reed vibrates against a mouthpiece. The alto saxophone belongs to this instrument family through its vibrating mouthpiece reed.
Concert pitch: The sounding pitch used as a common reference when instruments play together. Concert pitch distinguishes the alto’s actual sound from its transposed written notes.
Adolphe Sax: A Belgian instrument maker who invented the saxophone in the 1840s. Sax designed the instrument family that includes the alto.

Baritone saxophone: A large saxophone pitched in E-flat, sounding an octave below the alto saxophone. Its low range and larger size mark the opposite end of common saxophone roles.
