Alvars

The Alvars were Tamil poet-saints whose devotional hymns praise Vishnu and his forms. Their poems became foundational texts of Sri Vaishnavism.

Bhakti: A Hindu devotional tradition centered on loving attachment to a personal deity. The Alvars’ poetry gives an influential Tamil expression to devotion focused on Vishnu.
Nalayira Divya Prabandham: A collection of 4,000 Tamil devotional verses attributed to the Alvars. It preserves the body of Alvar poetry as a unified canonical collection.
Tamilakam: The ancient and medieval Tamil-speaking region of southern India. The Alvar tradition arose in Tamilakam and drew on its language and sacred landscape.
Sri Vaishnavism: A Hindu tradition devoted to Vishnu and Lakshmi, shaped by Tamil hymns and Sanskrit theology. The Alvar hymns became a central scriptural foundation for this tradition.
Vishnu: A major Hindu deity associated with preservation and protection, worshipped in many forms and incarnations. Vishnu and his forms are the central objects of Alvar devotion.
Nammalvar: An Alvar traditionally regarded as the greatest Tamil poet-saint of the group. His works form a substantial and especially influential portion of the Prabandham.
Andal: A woman poet-saint of the Alvar tradition, celebrated for hymns expressing devotion to Vishnu. She is the only woman counted among the twelve Alvars in Sri Vaishnava tradition.
Ramanuja: An eleventh- and twelfth-century philosopher and theologian central to Sri Vaishnavism. His tradition treated the Alvar hymns as authoritative alongside Sanskrit scripture.
Tamil literature: Literature composed in Tamil, one of the world’s longest-continuously used classical languages. The Alvars composed in Tamil, making vernacular poetry a vehicle for intense religious devotion.
Tiruppavai: A cycle of thirty Tamil devotional hymns composed by Andal. It remains a widely recited Alvar work, especially during the Tamil month of Margazhi.
