Amanohashidate

Amanohashidate is a pine-covered sandbar crossing Miyazu Bay in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. It is one of Japan’s Three Scenic Views.

Kasamatsu Park: A hillside park overlooking Amanohashidate from the northern side of Miyazu Bay. Its “matanozoki” viewpoint frames the sandbar upside down between the legs.
Tombolo: A depositional landform that connects an island to a mainland or another island. Amanohashidate is often described as a tombolo, though its formation involves more complex coastal processes.
Nihon Sankei: The traditional designation for Japan’s Three Scenic Views: Matsushima, Amanohashidate, and Itsukushima. Amanohashidate’s national fame is inseparable from this three-place tradition.
Amanohashidate Station: A railway station in Miyazu, Kyoto Prefecture, served by the Kyoto Tango Railway. The station provides convenient access to the southern entrance and nearby viewpoints.
Amanohashidate View Land: An amusement park and observation area on Mount Monju, south of Amanohashidate. Its elevated southern view gives the sandbar a dragon-like profile.
Sandbar: A ridge or bar of sand deposited by currents, waves, or tides in a body of water. The name describes the narrow sandy landform on which Amanohashidate’s pines grow.
Hayashi Gahō: A Japanese Confucian scholar and historian who lived from 1618 to 1680. He is credited with naming the Three Scenic Views in his 1643 work.
Kyoto Tango Railway: A regional railway network serving northern Kyoto Prefecture and parts of Hyogo Prefecture. Its trains connect Amanohashidate with other destinations along the Tango coast.
Chion-ji: A Buddhist temple of the Rinzai Zen school beside the southern entrance to Amanohashidate. The temple’s setting links the scenic route to Monju, the bodhisattva of wisdom.
Longshore drift: The transport of sediment along a coast by waves approaching at an angle. Alongshore sediment movement helps explain how coastal bars can develop and shift.
