Amarna Period

The Amarna Period was a phase of Egypt’s Eighteenth Dynasty centered on Akhenaten’s reign, marked by worship of the Aten, a new capital, and distinctive art.

Atenism: A religious system centered on the Aten, the visible disk of the sun, promoted by Akhenaten. Its elevation of the Aten defined the period’s most consequential religious reform.
Amenhotep III: An Eighteenth Dynasty pharaoh whose long reign preceded Akhenaten’s. His reign provides the immediate dynastic setting for Akhenaten’s accession.
Amarna art: The artistic style associated with Akhenaten’s court, known for distinctive royal forms and scenes. Its bodily forms and intimate royal imagery make the period visually recognizable.
Restoration of traditional Egyptian religion under Tutankhamun: The revival of established Egyptian cults and temples during Tutankhamun’s reign. It reversed the suppression and displacement of traditional cults associated with Akhenaten.
Akhetaten: The city Akhenaten founded as Egypt’s capital at modern Amarna. The new capital gave the royal court and Aten worship a purpose-built center.
Amenhotep IV: The birth name of Akhenaten, used before he changed it during his reign. The name change signaled a shift in the royal program associated with the period.
Nefertiti Bust: A painted limestone bust of Nefertiti discovered in the sculptor Thutmose’s workshop at Amarna. The bust is a celebrated surviving image of the period’s royal portraiture.
Horemheb: An Egyptian general who became pharaoh and promoted restoration after the Amarna rulers. His reign further dismantled the institutional legacy of Akhenaten’s court.
Great Hymn to the Aten: An Egyptian hymn praising the Aten, preserved in a tomb at Amarna. Its language expresses the theology promoted by Akhenaten’s court.
Nefertiti: An Egyptian queen and principal wife of Akhenaten, prominent in Amarna art and religious scenes. Her public prominence helped shape the distinctive royal image of the period.
