Amateur astronomy

Amateur astronomy is the pursuit of observing, studying, or contributing to astronomical research outside professional employment. It ranges from casual stargazing to sustained scientific observation and discovery.

Variable star observing: The repeated measurement of stars whose brightness changes over time. Long-running amateur observations track changes that professional surveys may miss.
Amateur telescope: A telescope designed or used for astronomy outside professional observatories. Aperture and optical design determine which targets an observer can resolve or detect.
Visual astronomy: Astronomical observation made directly through the eye, usually with unaided vision or optical instruments. It remains a central approach for observing bright objects and learning the sky.
John Herschel: An English astronomer who surveyed the southern sky and expanded his father’s work on nebulae and star clusters. His nineteenth-century observing exemplified astronomy pursued with privately organized resources.
Citizen science: Scientific research conducted with participation from members of the public. Amateur astronomy is a long-established form of public participation in scientific work.

Binocular astronomy: Astronomical observation using binoculars rather than a telescope. Binoculars offer a simple, wide-field introduction to observing the night sky.
