Amazon Basin

The Amazon Basin is the vast area drained by the Amazon River and its tributaries, extending east from the northern and central Andes across northern South America.

Amazon River: South America's largest river by discharge, flowing eastward from the Andes to the Atlantic Ocean. Its main channel gathers water from across the basin.
Intertropical Convergence Zone: A tropical belt of converging trade winds where rising air produces frequent rainfall. Its seasonal migration helps shift rainfall across the basin.
Amazon River transport: The movement of people and goods along the Amazon and its navigable tributaries. Rivers provide major transport routes where roads are sparse.
Amazon rainforest tipping point: A hypothesized threshold beyond which forest loss and drying could trigger widespread ecosystem change in the Amazon. It describes a potential basin-scale consequence of compounding disturbance.
Amazon deforestation threshold: The uncertain level of forest loss at which Amazon ecosystems may undergo large-scale, persistent change. Estimates differ on whether cumulative clearing could disrupt basin-wide rainfall and forest resilience.
Amazon rainforest: A vast tropical rainforest covering much of the Amazon Basin. Forest and basin overlap extensively, though their boundaries are not identical.
Amazon River plume: A large region of low-salinity, nutrient-rich water formed where the Amazon discharges into the Atlantic. It carries the basin's freshwater and sediment beyond the river mouth.
Amazon rubber boom: The late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century expansion of rubber extraction in Amazonia. Rubber demand drew global commerce and migration into the basin.
Amazon drought: A period of unusually low rainfall and river levels affecting parts of the Amazon region. Severe drought stresses ecosystems, communities, and river transport.
Amazon river source: The headwater origin of the Amazon River, associated with several streams in the Peruvian Andes. Competing definitions of the source reflect choices about river length and discharge.
