The late 19th- and early 20th-century boom in natural-rubber extraction from the Amazon basin. It brought rapid urban growth to Manaus and Belém while relying on coercive labor and forest collection.

Hevea brasiliensis: A South American tree whose latex is the principal source of natural rubber. Its wild Amazon populations supplied the latex tapped during the boom.
