Ambiguity

Ambiguity is the human condition of being both a situated, embodied fact and an open-ended possibility. It describes how freedom and constraint coexist in lived experience.

Embodiment: Embodiment is the condition of existing and acting through a living body. The body is a fact of existence and the medium through which possibilities become real.
Immanence: Immanence is existence confined to repetition, passivity, or the maintenance of given conditions. It marks the pull toward accepting circumstances as fixed rather than projecting possibilities.
Simone de Beauvoir: Simone de Beauvoir was a French philosopher and writer whose work examined freedom, gender, and social conditions. She made ambiguity the central concept of her existential ethics.
Determinism: Determinism is the view that every event follows necessarily from prior conditions and laws. It conflicts with treating human projects as meaningful possibilities within constraints.
The Second Sex: The Second Sex is Simone de Beauvoir's 1949 study of women's social and historical subordination. It applies existential analysis to how women are made into social others.
Existentialism: Existentialism is a philosophical tradition focused on existence, freedom, responsibility, and lived experience. Ambiguity belongs to existentialist accounts of freedom within concrete conditions.
Oppression: Oppression is the systematic restriction of a group's freedom, resources, or social standing by another group or institution. It shows how social conditions can deny some people the practical means to pursue possibilities.
Jean-Paul Sartre: Jean-Paul Sartre was a French philosopher and writer associated with existentialism and phenomenology. His account of freedom and facticity provides a close philosophical interlocutor for Beauvoir.
Essentialism: Essentialism is the view that entities have defining properties that make them what they are. A fixed human essence would erase the openness central to ambiguity.
Existential Feminism: Existential feminism applies existential ideas about freedom and situation to gender and women's lives. It examines how social roles constrain possibilities without fixing human identity.
